Late nights... 03/29/2008

So I am now having to write my blogs late at night. There have been numerous robberies on the road that we live on – Moo Cow Trail. There have 4 in about a month. This is VERY unusual. This many robberies doesn’t usually even happen in a year here! The locals that live around here around our town are so nice and they really do love us and care for us. If you talk to a local about what is happening they get really upset about it. They – as did we – considered this a pretty safe place. The spouses really get to know many locals. We are continually running errands, taking different transports and taxis, getting to know the drivers and other people we deal with daily. Unlike the students who don’t even realize they live in the Caribbean because they are stuck in classrooms and studying all day. The locals also take us on tours and shopping trips to Roseau. Most people here are so genuine and caring. Especially if you ask them a question about Dominica or the fruits that grow around here, etc.

Anyway – so I have been really impressed with how Ross has handled this situation of robberies. The robbers have been hiding in the bushes right on the trail so the school had the bushes cut all along the trail 12 feet back! They also had new lights installed all along the trail. And Ross security is sitting there 24/7. The robberies have actually been happening at the beginning of the trail and we live pretty much at the end. So they haven’t been near our house – just on our route home. Not that we ever walked home at night anyway. I mean – who walks alone at night with a backpack that has a laptop in it anyway? I sure as heck wouldn’t do that where we came from in Little Rock, Arkansas!!! So I think its partly the students fault for walking home at night alone (goobers). The school provides free transports (16 passenger vans) straight to your front door (from the school) every thirty minutes starting at dark and going all night. And if your not at school then it is only $6.50EC ($2.43 U.S.) to take a taxi home – which are very safe.

Also – our house and the apartments like 50 feet from us (we have the same landlord) have on foot security that walks around all night. And they really do – we see them often. They are very scared of Ellie. She can be pretty intimidating. When she goes outside to potty at night sometimes she spots them and freaks out and starts barking like crazy and they freak out too.

Anyway – so the reason I have to write my blogs at night is because Justin studies in one of the classrooms on campus till late at night – usually 11ish. So I have to sit beside him and think of stuff to do for about 4 hours. Because I don’t feel comfortable at our house that late at night by myself. Like tonight I made pictures with Skittles (one of the pictures is above), watched a movie on my computer, and wrote this blog. Fun stuff huh?
