So yesterday Jusin had a looonnnggg day. He was in class from 8-12, came home for lunch, was in lab from 1-5, came home for dinner, then had to meet his study group on campus at 7. Needless to say he didnt get much studying done yesterday - which stresses him out a little. I went to Portsmouth yesterday (a town right next to us - a little bigger) with a friend. I got a bath rug and some hair clippers. Justin cuts his own hair and we brought a 110 volt (is that right?) well - we brought whatever we use in the states. Anyway - here it is a 220 volt plug in. We have a transformer but for some reason it caused his clippers to fall apart - literally. Oh and I got a flashlight because the only one Justin has is this flashlight that goes around his head. Seriously - I still have to teach  him how to be cool sometimes. HAHAHA

So - Im going to tell you a story about our house that will explain the pictures above. We used to have this "circle area" in our floor. We thought maybe it was like a "knot in the wood"?? Well - one day I was sweeping (yes I sweep) and I moved the table over a little and the table leg hit that "circle area" and went straight through it!! Seriously - went straight through to the outdoors. So for a night we had a "peep hole" to the ground. So I sprayed it with bug spray and Andrew (the maintenance man) came and fixed it the next day!!

And the title is for my mom. Here new favorite sone is "Hole in the World" by the Eagles.

First let me start by telling everyone that we brought our two dogs over here. Fisher (rottweiler/lab mix) and Ellie (labrador retriever). I am very thankful we brought them because they have kept me company. It was hard getting them over here but we feel that it was worth it. So on with my story.....

Fisher is not adapting very well to island life. The first week we were here we were walking them down the street on the sidewalk to campus. Well - here in Dominica fenced in animals are very rare. So the cows, goats, chickens, etc. walk around as they please. So were walking the dogs - Justin has Fisher, I have Ellie - and all of a sudden there is a cow right beside the sidewalk leisurely munching on some grass. Well Fisher barked and jumped at him (he was on a leash). And then there goes the cow - chasing Justin and Fisher down the road. It's funny now but imagine watching your husband getting chased by a cow - not so funny then!! So that was the first incident.

The above picture of Fisher and his ex friend Wilber. At first Wilber would greet Fisher when he came up to the fence. Well - then one day Fisher decides to put his head through the fence and bite Wilber on top of his head. Needless to say - Wilber quit coming to greet Fisher when he walked by!!! So that was the second incident.

So last Friday afternoon I was at the pool so Justin was taking the dogs out to the bathroom. During this time Justin walked over to talk to Andrew - the maintenance man of our house and the apartments down the road. Well out pops Wilber (Andrew was walking him - this goat is like a pet). So Fisher bust out of his collar and ATTACKS Wilber!!!! Justin said it took everything he had to get that dog off of that poor goat. He said at one point he was literally wrestling with them. Eventually - somehow Justin got Fishers grip released. Yes the goat is somehow miraculously fine - just a few minor cuts. Oh - and by the way - Wilber is our Landlords goat!!! She hasnt said anything to us yet but hopefully we wont get kicked out. So that was the third and hopefully FINAL incident with the local animals!! More stories to come.....

Welcome!! 01/28/2008

We have been in Dominica for a little over three weeks and I feel like there is so much to say to catch everyone up!! Let me start by first telling everyone that we are doing great!! The first three – four days were extremely hard. To say it was a culture shock to come here is an understatement!!! Dominica is not your typical Caribbean island that a lot of people think it is. It is very poor here and the life of convenience has been thrown out for the next year and a half that were here. But after “adjusting” to island life we have grown to really like it here. Justin really hasn’t been able to experience the culture and the island like I have gotten to because he is in class or at home studying most of the time he is awake. I am using this website so that yall can keep up with our every day “adventures”. Check out my first story tomorrow about how Fisher (one of our dogs) is interacting with the local animals!! If you want to contact us please go the “contact us” link at the top, fill in all of the info and an email will be sent to us. We would love to hear from you and will try to write back ASAP!!! Love yall and thanks to everyone for their support.
